If it’s May it must be NAPLAN time

Many parents will know that the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests which are being held later this month form the basis of  data used on the My School website. But generally speaking few will have much idea what all the statistics really mean.

Maralyn Parker is the education columnist for the Daily Telegraph and she has written a book “My School – What Every Parent Needs To Know” which attempts to explain what NAPLAN and the My School website are all about.

She was interviewed for the Life Matters program on Monday 2nd May.  She talks about the upcoming tests and what the results on your child’s efforts that they will send you might mean. and whether spending thousands on coaching for selective schools is worthwhile. You can download or listen to a streaming audo at the Life Matters site.

2011 Sock Drive

The Sock Drive is to help raise funds for the purchase of a new Electronic Whiteboard.

Talking to GHS students they say they are better motivated and that their learning has benefited from the use of electronic whiteboards. They like the idea of being able to see what they were supposed to be doing rather than just being talked to. This links in with accelerated learning techniques involving visual rather than verbal instruction. Students said their attention was more focussed from having a large focal point and colour image within the room.

In 2009 your P&C donated $15,000 towards the purchase of 2 whiteboards and this year we would like to raise as much as we can so as we can deck out as many classrooms as possible with these.

So we are having another “Sock Drive” using the Sock it To You brochure inserted in this month’s Mercury. It is full of great products which you can buy for your family or as gifts. Like a Chocolate Drive, your P&C will get a 10% commission. Many products are Australian made so they make great gifts for friends and relatives overseas. Several people who have ordered the Sock it to You products have commented on the great quality of the products, and in particular the socks.

Simply fill out the form with the items you want, attach a cheque or fill out your credit card details (no cash please) and send the form back to school office by Thursday 7th April 2011 and a short time later you will get your order packed neatly in a handy carry-home bag.

In 2009 our local newspaper, The Parramatta Advertiser, covered the special assembly held to commemorate the opening of the school’s new science laboratories.
